UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - John Carroll University will study the history of Jesuit slaveholding and the role its namesake played, school President Robert Niehoff announced. In an email to alumni Wednesday, Rev. Niehoff wrote that the university "must create and charge our own campus community Working Group to engage the U.S. Jesuit slaveholding history and our own Archbishop John Carroll's role in this sin, which is such a perversion of God's creation." The university, which was founded in 1886 by the Society of Jesuits as St. Ignatius College, was renamed John Carroll University in 1923 after the first Catholic archbishop in the United States. The change was for "reasons that have never been completely clear," the university's history says. The school joins other colleges across the country that have examined ties to slaveholding and the Confederacy, Inside Higher Ed reported. Many investigations have been done at the request of students. While other schools have changed names of buildings that had been named after slaveholders, John Carroll may be the first college to examine its name. According to a reportreleased earlier this month by Georgetown University, which has been examining the role slavery played in its history, Carroll "not only took part in the management of the Jesuit plantations and in slaveholding at some level, but that he also owned at least one slave who was given his freedom in Archbishop Carroll's will," Niehoff wrote. "I know that this will come as a shock and a disappointment to many of you, as it is to me," he wrote. "It is now up to our community to engage this history and learn more about both Jesuit slaveholding and Archbishop Carroll's role in it." What did the Georgetown report say? Georgetown relied on Jesuit plantations in Maryland to help finance its operations, university officials have said. The sale of 272 slaves in 1838 - worth about $3.3 million in today's dollars -- to pay off debts was organized by two of Georgetown's early presidents, both Jesuit priests, the New York Times reported. The university created a working group that released the 104-page report. Georgetown announced it will offer preferential treatment to descendants of the 272 slaves. It will also establish a new Institute for the Study of Slavery and Its Legacies at Georgetown, rename two campus buildings, and create a public memorial to enslaved people. What are other Jesuit schools doing? Niehoff shared with alumni a letterto Jesuit leaders about the Georgetown report from the Very Rev. Timothy Kesicki, a John Carroll alumnus who is president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the U.S. Kesicki wrote that other Jesuit universities are looking at their historical connections to slavery. "Racial injustice is still a powerful force shaping our society, and we must recognize that we have contributed to this legacy," he wrote. "We do the descendants and this past a disservice if we decide that this is someone else's history, another school's, another province's." Niehoff wrote that he envisioned the university's Working Group "will develop a participative campus process to help us learn about the historical record, taking advantage of the work that has been done on other campuses, and make recommendations about how we acknowledge this history and grow in our commitment to justice for all people."
